What Happened and Why Your Electrical System May Need Attention
Severe thunderstorms swept through Connecticut on July 4-5, 2026, bringing high winds, heavy rain, lightning, and downed trees that caused widespread outages across the state. At peak, more than 120,000 Eversource customers lost power. Hardest-hit towns included New Fairfield, Bristol, Harwinton, New Canaan, and Norwalk. Eversource brought in out-of-state crews from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Canada to accelerate restoration - an unusual step that reflects the scale of the damage. As of Monday July 6, 98% of customers had power restored; full restoration was expected by Tuesday night.
The return of utility power is not the same as the all-clear for your home's electrical system. When power goes out suddenly during a severe storm, several things can happen to home wiring and equipment: voltage spikes when power returns can stress or damage appliances and circuit breakers; lightning nearby can induce transient voltage surges that travel into the home through utility connections or ground paths; flooding around the foundation or near electrical panels creates moisture risk; and extended outage can cause equipment to fail in ways that are not immediately obvious when power is restored.
None of these are reasons to panic, and many homes will come through the storm without any lasting electrical damage. But some problems are not visible to the naked eye and are not safe for homeowners to investigate themselves. This guide covers what you can safely observe at home and what warrants a call to a licensed electrician.
What to Check Before You Assume Everything Is Fine
Start with your electrical panel. Open the panel cover and look for any breakers that have tripped to the center position - the 'tripped' position, which is between fully on and fully off. A breaker that tripped during the storm should be reset only after you have confirmed that the circuit and the appliances on it are dry and undamaged. Breakers that trip repeatedly after reset, or that feel physically warm when the panel is otherwise operating normally, should be evaluated by a licensed electrician before being put back into regular use.
Next, check all GFCI outlets - the outlets with the test and reset buttons, typically in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor locations. Press the reset button on each GFCI outlet you find; if it does not reset or trips immediately when reset, the outlet may have been damaged by moisture intrusion or a surge event and should be replaced by a licensed electrician. GFCI outlets that are working correctly are one of your primary electrical safety protections, and a non-functional GFCI in a wet location is a serious hazard.
For homes with whole-house surge protectors installed at the panel: check the indicator light on the device if it is visible. Many surge protectors have a green light that indicates the device is functioning; if the light is off or red, the device may have sacrificed itself protecting your home's circuits from a surge event. When to Call a Licensed Electrician - Not Tomorrow, Today
Some post-storm findings warrant immediate professional attention rather than waiting. Call a licensed electrician without delay if you observe any of the following: a burning smell anywhere in the home with no obvious source; discoloration, scorch marks, or heat damage around any outlet, switch, or panel component; any outlet or switch that produces sparks when used; a circuit breaker that trips immediately every time it is reset; flooding or standing water that reached any part of the electrical panel, subpanel, or electrical conduit; or any appliance that was submerged in water during the storm.
Do not plug in appliances that were submerged in floodwater and attempt to dry them out yourself - the risk of internal electrical failure that could cause a fire or shock is too high. Appliances that were submerged should be evaluated by a technician or replaced. Similarly, electrical panels and subpanels that had water intrusion should be inspected and dried by a licensed electrician before power is restored to affected circuits.

7 Post-Storm Electrical Checks for Connecticut Homeowners
After a major storm outage, these are the specific things to look for before assuming your home's electrical system is back to normal.
- Check for tripped breakers at the panel: Open your electrical panel and look for any breakers in the center (tripped) position. A tripped breaker should be reset only after you confirm the circuit and connected appliances are dry. Breakers that trip again immediately warrant professional evaluation.
- Test and reset all GFCI outlets: GFCI outlets in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoor locations, and near water should be tested using the test and reset buttons. A GFCI that does not reset or trips immediately after reset may have been damaged and should be replaced by a licensed electrician.
- Check your whole-house surge protector indicator light: If your home has a whole-house surge protector at the panel, check its indicator light. A depleted surge protector may have absorbed a surge event and needs replacement to restore protection. If no light is visible, call your electrician to inspect the device.
- Look for scorch marks, discoloration, or unusual heat around outlets and switches: Visual signs of surge damage or arcing - discoloration, scorch marks, or bubbling around outlet or switch faceplates - should be evaluated by a licensed electrician before using those outlets or circuits again.
- Check whether any flooding reached your electrical panel or subpanel: If storm runoff, basement flooding, or any water intrusion reached your electrical panel, subpanel, or any conduit leading to it, do not restore power to those circuits until a licensed electrician has inspected and dried the equipment.
- Do not plug in appliances that were submerged in water: Any appliance submerged in floodwater should not be plugged in or turned on until evaluated by a technician or replaced. Internal water damage in appliances creates serious shock and fire risk that is not visible externally.
- Call a licensed electrician if you smell burning anywhere in the home: A burning smell with no obvious source is a serious warning sign of electrical arcing or damage inside walls, at the panel, or in concealed wiring. Do not ignore it. Call a licensed electrician immediately - this is not a wait-and-see situation.
