What's Specific About Eversource Coordination in Eastern CT
Where Eversource's responsibility ends and yours begins
A common Eastern CT homeowner confusion: which parts of the electrical service does Eversource own, and which parts are the homeowner's responsibility? The short answer: Eversource owns the overhead drop (or underground service) from the utility pole or transformer up to and including the meter. The meter base, the service entrance cable from the meter to the panel, the panel itself, the grounding electrode, and everything inside the house — homeowner responsibility, electrician work. Service upgrades, mast repairs, and meter base replacements typically require BOTH parties to do work, sequenced correctly.
Scheduling a planned outage
Service upgrades, panel swaps, and meter base replacements require a planned utility outage — Eversource sends a tech to disconnect the meter side so we can do the work safely. Scheduling typically takes 5-10 business days from request to outage date in normal conditions, longer during peak storm restoration periods. We handle the scheduling, the customer typically just needs to confirm the date and be home for the technician arrival window.
EV rebate paperwork
Eversource Connecticut offers EV-charger installation rebates up to $1,000 for residential Level 2 installs, with higher tiers for managed-charging program participation. The paperwork is detailed: install proof, equipment specs, electrician licensing, GPS-tagged photos, billing-account verification. We pre-fill the customer-facing fields during install, submit on your behalf, and the rebate typically arrives 6-10 weeks after submission. We track active EV rebate paperwork for every customer until check arrives.
Solar PV and battery storage interconnection
Solar PV systems and home battery storage require Eversource interconnection approval before they can grid-tie. The process involves a system-design submission, interconnection agreement, net-metering setup, and final inspection coordination. For most residential solar installs Eastern CT timelines run 4-12 weeks from contract to operational system, with Eversource paperwork running in parallel. We do the electrical side and handle the utility paperwork for solar installs where we're the electrical contractor.
How an Eversource Service Upgrade Actually Runs
Every service-side job in Eastern CT moves through the same four gates. Tyler runs all four so the utility, the town, and your panel line up on one timeline.
- 1
Service upgrade application
Going from 100A to 200A (or adding a second meter for an ADU or shop) starts with a service-change request to Eversource. Tyler files it with your account number, the new panel spec, and the requested load. Eversource reviews whether the existing transformer and drop can carry the higher amperage — on some older Willington and Ashford streets the transformer itself has to be upsized first, which adds lead time. We flag that during the estimate so there are no surprises.
- 2
Overhead drop vs underground service
New service comes in one of two ways. An overhead drop runs from the pole to a mast on your roofline — faster and cheaper, but the mast height and clearance over the driveway have to meet code. Underground (a lateral from a pad-mount transformer or handhole) is cleaner-looking and storm-resistant but needs a trench, conduit, and a coordinated locate before digging. Tyler sizes the mast or the conduit run, sets the meter base, and tells Eversource which type of connection to bring.
- 3
Meter pull, temp disconnect, and reset
For a panel swap the meter has to come out so the service-entrance conductors are dead while we work. Eversource pulls the meter (or cuts and re-tags the drop), we replace the panel and land the new feeders, then they reset the meter and re-energize. For jobs that can’t lose power for the full day, we can stage a temporary service so critical circuits stay live — useful for well pumps, sump pumps, and medical equipment.
- 4
Municipal permit + inspection sign-off BEFORE re-energizing
This is the step homeowners miss. Eversource will not reconnect an upgraded service until the local wiring inspector has passed it and the town has released the permit to the utility. TJF pulls the permit in your town (Willington, Tolland, Mansfield, etc.), meets the inspector on site, and gets the green tag — then Eversource schedules the reset. Skip the inspection and your service sits de-energized. We own that hand-off so the timeline doesn’t stall.

Eversource Coordination FAQ
Who calls Eversource — me or the electrician?+
For most planned work involving the meter or service-side, the electrical contractor (us) initiates the coordination with Eversource — we have a dedicated utility-relations process and can typically schedule faster than a homeowner can. For outage reporting or billing questions, the homeowner contacts Eversource directly. For new construction service installs (new house, new meter), we handle the application and coordination.
How long does it take to schedule a planned utility outage for a panel upgrade?+
Typically 5-10 business days from request in normal periods, longer during peak storm-response seasons. We submit the planned-outage request with the customer's account info and target date, Eversource confirms the time window (usually morning, 4-6 hours), and we coordinate the panel swap during that window. Tyler personally meets the Eversource tech for the disconnect and reconnect.
My account has the wrong service amperage on file. Will Eversource update it after a service upgrade?+
Yes — and they need to, because the meter ID and service amperage on file determine billing classification and load capacity records. After a 100A to 200A service upgrade, we submit the update to Eversource as part of the install paperwork. The billing record updates within 1-2 billing cycles. If you don't see it update, we follow up on your behalf.
What happens during storm restoration — can I get my service work scheduled?+
During major storm restoration events (multi-day outages from ice storms, hurricanes, or major nor'easters), Eversource priorities shift entirely to restoration. Planned-outage requests for non-emergency work are typically deferred until restoration is complete. For emergency work (damaged service drop, fire-related disconnects), there's a separate emergency channel — we handle that escalation when needed.
Do I need to be home when Eversource pulls the meter?+
Usually yes. The Eversource tech needs property access to pull the meter, and someone needs to confirm power-off so we can safely work. We coordinate the timing so the tech arrival and our crew arrival are within 30 minutes of each other; total customer-needed time is typically 4-6 hours from meter pull to meter reset.
Can you handle the Eversource solar interconnection paperwork?+
Yes — for solar PV installs where we are the contracted electrical contractor, we submit the interconnection application, manage the net-metering setup, and coordinate the final inspection. For installs where another contractor handled the solar but needs electrical-side help with Eversource paperwork, we can do that as a separate scope; call to discuss.
