New Construction Wiring
Rough-in to final · Builder-coordinated · Future-proofed for EV + heat pump + solar
New construction is the right moment to size up: future EV chargers, heat pumps, induction ranges, solar with battery storage, generator transfer switches. We plan for the next 10-20 years during rough-in, not after.
What's Specific About New Construction in Eastern CT
Future-proofing for the loads coming in 5 years
New construction wired today should anticipate the loads coming over the next 10-20 years: at least one EV charger per garage bay, mini-split or heat pump heating zones, induction range capacity, solar PV with battery storage, and a generator transfer switch. We size the service entry, plan panel-slot count, and pre-route key conduit during rough-in — none of which adds significant cost on day one but saves thousands in retrofits later.
Builder coordination — when we come in
We typically engage at the framing-complete stage for rough-in, before insulation. That means coordinated scheduling with the framer (must be done before us), insulator (must wait until our rough-in passes inspection), and drywaller (waits for our rough-in inspection). After drywall and finish, we come back for trim-out: outlets, switches, devices, light fixtures, and final inspection. Tyler personally meets the inspector at both rough-in and final.
Code-compliant from day one
New construction lets us do things right: AFCI-protected bedroom and living-area circuits, GFCI-protected kitchen, bath, garage, basement, and outdoor circuits, tamper-resistant outlets in family spaces, code-compliant outlet spacing and accessibility, smoke and CO detector interconnect, and modern panel labeling. Eastern CT towns (Tolland, Stafford, Mansfield, Vernon) each have slight code interpretation differences — we pull the permit through your specific town and adjust the install accordingly.
Remodel scope is different from new construction
Remodel wiring is closer to whole-home rewiring than to new construction — you're working around existing structure, often opening selective walls, integrating new circuits with old wiring, and updating panels to support added loads. We scope remodel projects separately from new construction. See /services/whole-home-rewiring/ for the related work.

New Construction Wiring FAQ
When in the construction timeline should I engage an electrician?+
Ideally during the design phase — we'll review the electrical plan for code compliance, future-proofing, and panel sizing. If you're already past that, engage us before framing is complete so we can do rough-in immediately after. Coming in later is fine but means we're working around already-installed insulation, plumbing, and HVAC — not impossible, just slower and more expensive.
How much should I budget for electrical on a new build?+
A typical new-construction electrical budget runs $8-$15 per square foot of finished space, plus $3,000-$8,000 for the service entry and panel. A 2,500 sq ft home runs roughly $25,000-$50,000 all-in for electrical including service, panel, rough-in, trim, devices, fixtures, and inspections. EV-charger-ready and solar-ready provisions add $500-$2,500 depending on scope. Custom premium features (whole-home automation, premium device finishes) add more.
Do you work with general contractors, or only directly with owners?+
Both. We're happy to subcontract under a GC who has the master contract with you, or to work directly as your electrical contractor in a multi-trade build. GC coordination is straightforward — we follow the project schedule, attend the OAC meetings if useful, and submit per the contract structure.
What does "EV-ready" actually mean for a new build?+
At minimum: a dedicated 50A or 60A 240V circuit run from the panel to a NEMA 14-50 outlet in the garage. Better: pre-pull a 1" conduit from the panel to two garage locations so you can add Wall Connectors later without opening walls. Best: actually install the Wall Connectors during construction. Cost difference between "ready" and "installed" is $500-$1,500 per charger.
How long does electrical take in a new build?+
Rough-in is typically 1-2 weeks of working time for a 2,500-3,500 sq ft home. After rough-in inspection passes, the project waits while drywall, paint, flooring, and millwork happen — usually 4-8 weeks. Trim and final-inspection takes another 1-2 weeks. Total electrical-active time on the project: roughly 3-4 weeks spread across 3-4 months of construction.
