Whole-Home Surge Protection

Type 2 panel-mount · Point-of-use HVAC/well · Lightning damage prevention

Eastern CT's elevation patterns put Willington Hill, the Route 44 corridor, and the Yale-Myers forest ridges in heavy lightning territory. A $400 panel-mount surge protector costs less than fixing one fried HVAC board.

What's Specific About Surge Protection in Eastern CT

Lightning frequency in Eastern CT's storm corridors

Eastern CT's elevation patterns — Willington Hill, the Yale-Myers Forest ridges, the Route 44 corridor, the Vernon Notch — see noticeably higher lightning strike density than flatter parts of the state. We see at least one lightning-damaged panel replacement per storm season, usually accompanied by fried HVAC control boards, well-pump relays, routers, and modems on the same property. Whole-home surge protection cuts that risk dramatically.

Type 1 / Type 2 / Type 3 — what actually goes where

Type 1 protectors install at the meter base (utility side) and handle direct strike surge. Type 2 protectors install at the panel (load side) and handle the much more common indirect-induced surges from nearby strikes and utility transients. Type 3 (point-of-use) protectors install at the specific device — HVAC condensers, well-pump controllers, refrigerators, audio/video equipment. The standard package we recommend for most Eastern CT homes is Type 2 at the panel + Type 3 on the well pump and HVAC.

What gets fried when a surge hits an unprotected home

Typical loss list from a single nearby strike: HVAC control board ($400-$1,200 replacement), well-pump relay or controller ($300-$800), router and modem ($150-$400), one or more televisions, audio/video gear, smart-home hubs, sometimes the dishwasher control board and microwave control panel. A $300-$600 Type 2 install at the panel costs less than the smallest item on that loss list.

Generators and surge protection work together, not against each other

A whole-home generator with a transfer switch keeps your circuits energized during utility outages — but the generator itself can produce voltage transients during the auto-transfer cycle that fry sensitive electronics. Whole-home surge protection at the panel protects against both grid-side and generator-side transients. Most of our Generac installs in Eastern CT include a Type 2 surge protector at the same panel as a bundled add-on.

Surge Protection FAQ

How much does whole-home surge protection cost installed?+

A Type 2 panel-mount surge protector installed runs $400-$800 depending on the device specification (joule rating, response time, indicator features) and whether your existing panel has room for the breakers it requires. Bundled point-of-use protection on the HVAC condenser and well pump adds $200-$400 total. Installation is a 1-2 hour job; no major outage required.

Will my homeowner's insurance pay if a lightning strike damages my electronics?+

Most CT homeowner policies do cover lightning damage — but with a deductible ($500-$2,500 typical), and the claim count can affect renewal rates. Whole-home surge protection is preventative: it makes the claim less likely in the first place. Some carriers offer a small premium discount for documented whole-home surge protection installation; we can provide the documentation packet.

My power strip says "surge protector" — isn't that enough?+

No. Plug-in strip protectors are Type 3 point-of-use protection — useful for individual devices but they don't protect the rest of the house, they degrade over time (most strips need replacement every 3-5 years), and they don't protect hardwired loads like HVAC, well pumps, dishwashers, ranges, and lighting. Layered protection (Type 2 at the panel + Type 3 at sensitive devices) is the standard approach.

My house was hit by lightning last summer. Should I add surge protection now?+

Yes — and we should check whether the strike damaged the panel bus or grounding electrode at the same time. A direct or near-direct strike can degrade the panel's internal protection without obvious visible damage. We'll inspect during the surge-protector install and flag anything that needs additional work.

How long does a panel-mount surge protector last?+

A Type 2 panel-mount typically lasts 10-15 years under normal grid conditions. Each major surge degrades it incrementally. Modern protectors include an indicator light that goes from green to red when they need replacement. We label the protector with the install date and recommend a visual check every spring.
